SR CarnoSyn® Beta-Alanine & Carnosine Human Clinical Study Highlights
Brain Health & Mood Improvement
β‑Alanine ingestion increases muscle carnosine content and combat specific performance in soldiers.
Participants in SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine group significantly (p = 0.044) improved their time for the 50-m casualty carry and increased their performance (p = 0.022) in the SST, a 2-min serial subtraction test (SST) to assess cognitive function under stressful conditions, compared to PL. A significant elevation (p = 0.048) in muscle carnosine content was noted in SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine group compared to PL. Changes in muscle carnosine content was correlated to changes in fatigue rate (r = 0.633, p = 0.06). 1
β-alanine supplementation improves tactical performance but not cognitive function in combat soldiers.
SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine group had a significantly greater (p = 0.012) number of shots on target at Post (8.2 ± 1.0) than PL (6.5 ± 2.1), and their target engagement speed at Post was also significantly faster (p = 0.039). Results of this study indicate that 4-weeks of SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine ingestion in young, healthy soldiers did enhance power performance, marksmanship and target engagement speed from pre-ingestion levels. 2
Effects of High-Dose, Short-Duration β-Alanine Supplementation on Cognitive Function, Mood, and Circulating Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) in Recreationally-Active Males Before Simulated Military Operational Stress.
High-dose, short-duration SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine supplementation,14 days of SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine, 12 g day-1, may mitigate the onset of negative mood states in healthy, recreationally-active males prior to a simulated military operation assessed using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire. 3
Healthy Immunity Support
Effect of High-Dose, Short-Duration β-Alanine Supplementation on Circulating IL-10 Concentrations During Intense Military Training.
Magnitude-based inferences that were used to provide inferences on the true effect SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine (BA) may have had on IL-10 concentrations compared with PL, calculated from 90% confidence intervals. Data analysis indicated that changes in circulating IL-10 concentrations (mean difference 0.86 pg·ml) were possibly greater (57%) for BA than PL. Results of this study suggest that 1 week of high-dose SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine ingestion may enhance the anti-inflammatory response during intense military training, suggesting a potential therapeutic role of BA during intense training. 4
Muscle Function
Beta-alanine (SR CarnoSyn®) supplementation in elderly subjects (60–80 years): Effects on muscle carnosine content and physical capacity.
SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine supplementation is effective in increasing the muscle carnosine content in healthy elderly subjects, with subsequent improvement in their exercise capacity. Significant positive correlations were also shown between the relative change in the muscle carnosine content and the relative change in the time-to-exhaustion in the working capacity test. 5
Comparison of sustained-release and rapid-release β-alanine formulations on changes in skeletal muscle carnosine and histidine content and isometric performance following a muscle-damaging protocol.
Results of this study demonstrated that only participants consuming the SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine formulation experienced a significant increase in muscle carnosine. Differences in the muscle carnosine response between these formulations may have practical significance for athletic populations in which small changes may have important implications on performance. 6
Bone Health
Support
Oral nutritional supplement fortified with beta-alanine improves physical working capacity in older adults: A randomized, placebo-controlled study.
This study examined the effects of an oral nutritional supplement fortified with two different doses of beta-alanine on body composition, muscle function and physical capacity in older adults. Beta-alanine may improve physical working capacity, muscle quality and function in older men and women. These findings could have importance in the perception of frailty, and the maintenance of health and independent living in older adults. 7
Improvement of periarticular osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis by beta-alanyl-L-histidinato zinc: a pilot study.
The beta-alanyl-L-histidinato zinc (AHZ) treatment increased serum zinc (AHZ vs cimetidine, +48.0% vs +5.6%), and resulted in significant increases of serum bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (+93.5% vs -14.7%) and BMD of the bilateral ultradistal radius (+4.9% vs -5.6%). In the AHZ treatment, the percentage change in BMD of the unilateral ultradistal radius with more severe wrist pain was positively correlated with the percentage change in serum zinc (r = 0.97). These findings suggest for the first time that AHZ treatment improves periarticular osteoporosis, probably through an increase of bone formation, in postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis. 8
